The site was built in 1949, and was named after Jeston O. Ford, a city tax collector and assessor. Mr. Ford served on the Richmond Board of Education for 30 years.
Ford Elementary was redesigned and remodeled in 2012 in order to meet the needs of the 21st Century learners gracing its halls. The new design features a modern interpretation of a Mission Style building. The interior fosters learning by creating pathways for flexible and alternative teaching methodologies. The primary materials used in the remodeling are green and non-toxic. Insulation throughout the school, for example, is made from recycled blue jeans.
The outdoor environment was carefully laid out to maximize both security and play areas, as well as the plantings contribute to the outdoor curriculum. The Bioswales and the new garden are also educational components to demonstrate sustainability in action.
Ford Elementary received one of the highest sustainable (HPI) points in the State of California’s High Performance Incentive program from the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) for multiple energy-efficient systems.
